“Jesus wept.” — John 11:35

Two words.

One of the shortest verses in Scripture.

And one of the most profound pictures of the heart of Jesus.

When Lazarus becomes sick, Mary and Martha send word to Jesus. They know He loves their brother. They know He has the power to heal.

But Jesus does not arrive when they expect Him to.

Lazarus dies.

And when Jesus finally comes to Bethany, both sisters confront Him with essentially the same painful statement:

“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Their words carry faith and heartbreak at the same time.

When Jesus Wept reminds us that knowing the ending does not make Jesus indifferent to the pain in the middle.

Jesus knows Lazarus will rise.

And Jesus still weeps.

He does not stand outside human grief and offer distant explanations.

He enters it.

He sees Mary's tears.

He witnesses the sorrow surrounding the tomb.

And He weeps with those who are grieving.

That reveals something beautiful about the character of Christ.

God's sovereignty and His compassion are not opposites.

Jesus can know resurrection is coming and still acknowledge that death hurts.

This gives believers permission to grieve honestly.

Faith does not require us to pretend loss is painless.

Grief does not mean we have stopped trusting God.

Tears are not evidence that faith has failed.

Sometimes tears are simply evidence that love existed.

Mary and Martha also teach us something about bringing our questions to Jesus.

“Lord, if you had been here…”

Jesus does not reject them for saying it.

Their disappointment becomes part of their conversation with Him.

We can bring our own “if You had…” questions to God.

If You had answered differently.

If You had intervened sooner.

If You had changed the circumstances.

If You had prevented the loss.

We may not receive every explanation we desire.

But John 11 gives us something deeper than an explanation.

It gives us Jesus.

The One who stands beside the grieving.

The One who weeps.

The One who calls Lazarus from the grave.

And the One who ultimately defeats death through His own resurrection.

For the Christian, grief and hope can occupy the same heart.

We grieve because the loss is real.

And we hope because Jesus is still the resurrection and the life.
