What Do You Believe? | Christian Sunday School Lesson PDF

What you believe about God shapes how you live when life becomes difficult.

It is easy to say we believe God is faithful when everything is going well.

But what happens when prayers seem unanswered?

When circumstances do not make sense?

When fear becomes louder than faith?

When what we are experiencing seems to contradict what we thought we believed?

What Do You Believe? is a Scripture-centered Sunday School lesson designed to move beyond surface-level answers and help believers examine what they truly believe about God, His Word, His character, and His promises.

Because eventually, what we say we believe and what we actually believe will meet in the circumstances of everyday life.

What Do You Believe About God?

Before asking what we believe about ourselves or our circumstances, we must begin with God.

Do you believe He is good?

Faithful?

Trustworthy?

Present?

Sovereign?

Loving?

Do you believe those things only when life confirms them—or when circumstances appear to contradict them too?

Our theology becomes especially important when life stops cooperating with our expectations.

“I Believe; Help My Unbelief”

In Mark 9, a desperate father brings his son to Jesus.

Jesus tells him:

“Everything is possible for one who believes.”

The father responds:

“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

That may be one of Scripture’s most honest prayers.

Faith and struggle can exist in the same heart.

God is not intimidated by honest questions.

We can bring both our belief and our uncertainty to Him.

Circumstances Reveal Beliefs

Sometimes we do not realize what we truly believe until something tests it.

We say:

“God will provide.”

Then money becomes tight.

We say:

“God is with me.”

Then loneliness comes.

We say:

“God has a purpose.”

Then something happens that makes absolutely no sense.

Trials do not always create our beliefs.

Sometimes they reveal them.

They expose where truth has become deeply rooted and where God may still be teaching us to trust Him.

Faith Is More Than Agreement

Biblical faith is not simply agreeing that something about God is true.

James reminds us that even demons believe God exists.

Faith involves trust.

Trust changes how we respond.

If I truly believe God is faithful, I can obey when I cannot see the outcome.

If I believe His wisdom is greater than mine, I can surrender when His direction differs from my preference.

Belief eventually becomes behavior.

When Feelings Disagree With Truth

You may believe God is near and still feel alone.

You may believe God is working and still feel discouraged.

You may believe God is faithful and still struggle with fear.

Faith does not require pretending those emotions are absent.

It means refusing to allow them to become the final authority.

Feelings tell us what we are experiencing.

Scripture reminds us what remains true.

What Are You Building On?

Jesus describes two people who build houses.

One builds on rock.

One builds on sand.

Both experience the storm.

The difference is the foundation.

Faith does not guarantee a storm-free life.

It gives us something solid to stand on when storms come.

That foundation is not positive thinking.

It is Jesus Christ and His Word.

Belief Changes How We Live

Eventually, the question “What do you believe?” becomes deeply practical.

What you believe about God affects how you handle uncertainty.

What you believe about grace affects how you respond to failure.

What you believe about forgiveness affects relationships.

What you believe about God’s provision affects generosity.

What you believe about eternity affects priorities.

And what you believe about Jesus affects everything.

The goal of this lesson is not simply to help us say the right answers.

It is to help biblical truth move from something we know into something we increasingly trust and live.

So when circumstances become uncertain, we can return to what remains certain:

God is faithful.

His Word is true.

Jesus is Lord.

And faith can continue trusting Him even when we do not yet understand what He is doing.
