“Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon.” — Joshua 10:12

Joshua stood in the middle of an impossible situation and prayed an impossible prayer.

He needed more time.

The battle was not finished.

The victory had not yet been completed.

So Joshua asked God for something no human being could accomplish:

Sun, stand still.

And God answered.

Sun Stand Still is a Scripture-centered Christian devotional about courageous faith, bold prayer, obedience, and learning to trust God when what stands before us looks bigger than anything we could possibly accomplish on our own.

This devotional invites you to examine the places where fear has made your prayers smaller, circumstances have made you hesitant, or impossibility has convinced you to stop expecting God to move.

The God of the Impossible

Joshua 10 records one of Scripture’s most extraordinary moments.

Israel was fighting a battle.

Time was running out.

Joshua needed daylight.

Instead of surrendering to what appeared impossible, he prayed.

Boldly.

Specifically.

Expectantly.

Joshua understood something we often forget:

Our limitations are not God's limitations.

Bold Prayer Begins With Knowing God

Bold prayer is not demanding that God give us whatever we want.

It is not treating prayer like a formula for getting our preferred outcome.

Biblical boldness begins with confidence in the character of God.

We pray boldly because God is powerful.

Faithful.

Sovereign.

Wise.

Present.

And completely capable of doing what we cannot.

Faith Does Not Ignore Reality

Joshua knew exactly what he was facing.

Faith did not require him to pretend the battle was easy.

Biblical faith does not deny difficult circumstances.

It simply refuses to make circumstances bigger than God.

You can acknowledge:

This is difficult.

I don't know how this will work.

I cannot accomplish this on my own.

And still pray:

But God, I know You are able.

What Prayer Have You Stopped Praying?

Sometimes disappointment teaches us to protect ourselves by praying smaller prayers.

We stop asking.

Stop hoping.

Stop believing change is possible.

Sun Stand Still invites us to examine those places.

What would you pray if fear were not writing the prayer?

What have you decided is impossible before bringing it before God?

Where have you allowed past disappointment to determine present expectation?

Faith Still Requires Movement

Joshua prayed—but Joshua was also fighting the battle.

Prayer was not a substitute for obedience.

Throughout Scripture, faith and action repeatedly work together.

Pray.

Then take the next faithful step.

Trust.

Then obey.

Ask God to open the door.

Then be willing to walk through it.

Bold faith is not passive.

When God Answers Differently

Faith does not mean God must answer every prayer exactly as we imagine.

Sometimes He says yes.

Sometimes He redirects.

Sometimes He asks us to wait.

Sometimes He changes circumstances.

Sometimes He changes us within the circumstances.

Our confidence is not ultimately in receiving one particular answer.

Our confidence is in Him.

Your Impossible Place

Maybe you are facing something that feels impossible.

A relationship that needs restoration.

A calling bigger than your ability.

A season of waiting.

A dream that seems too far away.

A decision requiring courage.

A situation you cannot control.

A prayer you have carried for years.

You may not know what God will do.

But you can know who God is.

Pray Again

Joshua's prayer reminds us that faith can ask boldly while remaining surrendered.

You do not have to reduce God to the size of your circumstances.

Bring Him the prayer.

Bring Him the impossible place.

Bring Him the fear.

Bring Him the dream.

Bring Him the battle.

Then trust Him enough to leave the outcome in His hands.

Sun, Stand Still

There are moments when faith whispers.

There are other moments when faith stands in the middle of the battle and asks God for something only He can do.

Not because we control Him.

Not because we are guaranteed the outcome we imagine.

But because we know:

God is able.

So pray.

Obey.

Keep moving.

Trust His wisdom.

And do not allow the size of your circumstances to determine the size of your faith.

The same God Joshua trusted in the valley is still worthy of your trust today.
