She Had Heard

 

Rahab tells the spies:

 

“We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you.”

 

She had not witnessed the Red Sea.

 

She had heard.

 

And what she heard produced faith.

 

Everyone in Jericho had apparently heard about Israel’s God.

 

But Rahab responded differently.

 

She moved from hearing about God to placing her confidence in Him.

 

A Remarkable Confession

 

Rahab declares:

 

“The LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.”

 

That statement is remarkable coming from a woman raised within a pagan culture.

 

Rahab recognized something many others refused to acknowledge:

 

Israel’s God was the true God.

 

Faith begins to change the direction of her story.

 

Faith That Acts

 

Rahab did not merely say she believed.

 

She acted upon what she believed.

 

James later uses her as an example of faith demonstrated through works.

 

Her actions did not purchase God's grace.

 

They revealed the reality of her faith.

 

Biblical faith eventually affects how we live.

 

The Scarlet Cord

 

The spies instruct Rahab to place a scarlet cord in her window.

 

When judgment comes upon Jericho, that cord marks the place where Rahab and her household are to be protected.

 

The scarlet cord becomes a powerful picture within her story:

 

A visible sign connected with rescue.

 

A reminder that judgment was coming—but mercy had provided a way of deliverance.

 

Your Past Is Not Your Final Identity

 

Scripture does not hide Rahab’s history.

 

But neither does God allow that history to become the final chapter.

 

Rahab is eventually remembered in Hebrews 11—the great chapter of faith.

 

Her story is no longer simply:

 

Rahab the prostitute.

 

It becomes:

 

Rahab the woman of faith.

 

Rahab the rescued.

 

Rahab the courageous.

 

Rahab the woman included among God's people.

 

From Jericho to the Genealogy of Jesus

 

Then Matthew gives us an extraordinary detail.

 

Rahab appears in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.

 

The woman once living inside a condemned city becomes part of the lineage through which the Messiah enters the world.

 

That is redemption.

 

God did not merely rescue Rahab from Jericho.

 

He brought her into His redemptive story.

 

Grace Changes the Story

 

Rahab reminds us that God is not limited by where our story began.

 

Our background does not intimidate Him.

 

Our past does not surprise Him.

 

Our labels do not determine what He can do next.

 

Grace does not pretend the past never happened.

 

Grace demonstrates that the past does not have to possess the final word.

 

Faith Can Begin With One Decision

 

Rahab did not know everything about God.

 

But she responded faithfully to what she knew.

 

Sometimes we wait until we understand the entire journey before taking the next step.

 

Faith often works differently.

 

God reveals enough for one act of obedience.

 

Then another.

 

And another.

 

Rahab chose to trust the God she had heard about.

 

That decision changed not only her life but the generations that followed.

 

From the walls of Jericho...

 

to the people of Israel...

 

to the genealogy of Christ.

 

Never underestimate what God can do with one life surrendered to Him.
