Consider It Joy?

 

James begins with a challenging instruction:

 

“Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds.”

 

He does not say the trial itself is enjoyable.

 

He points to what God can produce through it.

 

The joy is not necessarily found in what is happening.

 

It is found in knowing that difficulty does not have to be wasted.

 

God can use even painful seasons to strengthen faith and develop maturity.

 

Tested Faith

 

We often discover what we truly believe when what we believe is tested.

 

It is easy to say:

 

“God is faithful”

 

when everything is going well.

 

The statement becomes much more significant when we continue believing it while we are waiting, grieving, struggling, or facing uncertainty.

 

Testing does not automatically destroy faith.

 

It can strengthen it.

 

Perseverance Is Developed

 

Perseverance is rarely something we suddenly possess.

 

It develops.

 

One difficult day.

 

One faithful decision.

 

One answered prayer.

 

One unanswered prayer.

 

One more step.

 

One more decision not to quit.

 

Over time, endurance becomes part of who we are.

 

Let Perseverance Finish

 

James gives us an important instruction:

 

Let perseverance finish its work.

 

We often want God to hurry the process.

 

Remove the difficulty.

 

Change the situation.

 

Open the door.

 

Give the answer.

 

But some spiritual development requires time.

 

A process interrupted too early may not produce everything it was capable of developing.

 

Sometimes the prayer becomes:

 

“God, if You are not removing this yet, help me become who You want me to be while I walk through it.”

 

Maturity Is the Goal

 

The goal is not suffering.

 

The goal is maturity.

 

A mature believer is increasingly:

 

Steady.

 

Rooted.

 

Wise.

 

Patient.

 

Faithful.

 

Discerning.

 

Dependent upon God.

 

Able to endure difficulty without allowing every circumstance to determine what they believe about Him.

 

Perseverance Is Not Perfection

 

Persevering does not mean never becoming tired.

 

It does not mean never crying.

 

Never questioning.

 

Never needing rest.

 

Never needing encouragement.

 

Sometimes perseverance looks remarkably ordinary.

 

You prayed again.

 

You opened your Bible again.

 

You went back to church.

 

You asked for help.

 

You chose obedience.

 

You took another step.

 

You did not quit.

 

Don't Waste the Trial

 

Trials are difficult enough without walking through them and learning nothing from them.

 

Ask:

 

What is this revealing about me?

 

Where is my faith being tested?

 

What is God teaching me?

 

What needs to become stronger?

 

Where do I need greater dependence upon Him?

 

The trial may not have been sent for your good, but God is capable of working within it for your growth.

 

Keep Going

 

You may not recognize maturity while it is developing.

 

Growth often becomes visible only when you look back.

 

The situation that once would have destroyed your peace no longer controls you.

 

The waiting that once created panic now sends you toward prayer.

 

The setback that once made you quit now makes you lean harder into God.

 

That is growth.

 

That is perseverance doing its work.

 

Do not underestimate what God is developing through your decision to keep walking faithfully.

 

The pathway may be difficult, but perseverance is producing maturity.
