The temple is standing.

“I Have Loved You”

Malachi begins with an extraordinary declaration from God:

“I have loved you.”

Israel responds:

“How have you loved us?”

That question reveals the condition of their hearts.

Disappointment has made them question something God has already established.

Before God confronts their behavior, He reminds them of the relationship.

Correction begins with covenant love.

When Worship Becomes Routine

The priests are offering sacrifices, but they are bringing animals they would never consider presenting to an earthly governor.

God confronts them because their offerings reveal their attitude toward Him.

They are technically worshiping while treating worship casually.

Malachi challenges us to ask:

Am I giving God genuine devotion—or simply giving Him what costs me the least?

Faithfulness Matters

Malachi moves from worship to relationships.

God confronts covenant unfaithfulness, including betrayal within marriage.

The message is clear:

Our relationship with God cannot be separated from how we treat people.

Faithfulness in worship should produce faithfulness in life.

Where Is the God of Justice?

The people look around and wonder why those doing wrong seem to prosper.

They ask:

“Where is the God of justice?”

God responds with a promise.

A messenger is coming.

Then the Lord Himself will come.

His arrival will be like:

“A refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.”

God has not ignored injustice.

But His judgment begins with purification.

Will a Man Rob God?

Malachi 3 contains the book’s best-known teaching about tithing.

Israel has neglected responsibilities established under the Mosaic covenant, and God accuses them of withholding what belongs to Him.

The passage should be understood within its covenant context rather than reduced to a formula promising automatic financial prosperity.

Its broader principle remains powerful:

Everything we possess ultimately belongs to God.

Faithful stewardship reveals something about our trust and priorities.

A Book of Remembrance

Not everyone has abandoned faithfulness.

Malachi tells us that those who fear the LORD speak with one another, and:

“A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name.”

God sees faithful people even when faithfulness appears unnoticed.

Obedience is never invisible to Him.

The Messenger Is Coming

Malachi closes the Old Testament looking forward.

God promises a messenger who will prepare the way.

Centuries later, the Gospels identify John the Baptist as the voice preparing the way for Jesus.

Malachi therefore stands at an important doorway in Scripture.

The Old Testament ends waiting.

The New Testament begins with the promised messenger arriving.

And behind him comes Christ.

When Faith Feels Routine

Malachi is especially relevant when faith becomes familiar.

It asks difficult questions:

Has worship become routine?

Have we given God leftovers?

Are our relationships marked by faithfulness?

Do our finances reflect stewardship?

Have disappointment and waiting made us question God’s goodness?

Are we living as though God truly sees?

Malachi calls God’s people back to wholehearted covenant faithfulness.

And underneath every correction stands the declaration with which the book began:

“I have loved you.”

God corrects His people because the relationship matters.

He remains faithful.

He does not change.

And the Messiah promised at the end of the Old Testament has come.
