Contend for the Faith

Jude writes:

“I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith.”

Truth matters.

Doctrine matters.

What Christians believe matters.

But contending for the faith does not mean becoming argumentative about everything.

Jude is confronting teachings that fundamentally distort the Gospel and Christian life.

Biblical discernment requires learning the difference between an issue worth discussing and an error that threatens essential truth.

When Grace Gets Distorted

Jude identifies one particularly dangerous problem.

Certain people were:

“Perverting the grace of our God into a license for immorality.”

Grace was being used to justify what grace was intended to transform.

Biblical grace forgives sinners.

But grace does not redefine sin so that repentance becomes unnecessary.

Grace does more than pardon.

Grace transforms.

Cain, Balaam & Korah

Jude points to three familiar Old Testament figures:

Cain. Balaam. Korah.

Each represents a dangerous spiritual pattern.

Cain represents rebellion.

Balaam represents corruption motivated by personal gain.

Korah represents rejection of God-established authority.

Together, they remind us that spiritual language does not automatically indicate spiritual faithfulness.

Character matters.

Fruit matters.

Truth matters.

Clouds Without Rain

Jude uses unforgettable imagery to describe deceptive teachers.

Clouds without rain.

Autumn trees without fruit.

Wild waves of the sea.

Wandering stars.

Each image communicates something similar:

They appear to promise something they cannot actually provide.

Biblical discernment learns to look beyond appearance.

Does the teaching agree with Scripture?

Does it accurately represent the Gospel?

Does it point people toward Christ?

Does it produce godly fruit?

Popularity alone cannot answer those questions.

Discernment in a World of Endless Voices

Believers today encounter more Christian teaching than almost any previous generation.

Sermons.

Podcasts.

Books.

YouTube videos.

Social media.

Bible studies.

Prophetic claims.

Short clips separated from their original context.

Jude’s message remains remarkably relevant.

Confidence is not proof of truth.

Popularity is not proof of truth.

A large platform is not proof of truth.

Emotional impact is not proof of truth.

Everything must ultimately be tested against God’s Word.

Discernment is not cynicism.

It is learning to recognize truth accurately.

Build Yourself Up

Jude does not tell believers to become obsessed with studying false teachers.

Instead, he turns their attention toward spiritual formation:

“Build yourselves up in your most holy faith.”

One of the strongest defenses against counterfeit teaching is deep familiarity with truth.

Know Scripture.

Understand the Gospel.

Grow in doctrine.

Develop spiritual maturity.

Become increasingly familiar with biblical truth so that distortion becomes easier to recognize.

Pray in the Holy Spirit

Jude continues:

“Praying in the Holy Spirit.”

Discernment is not merely intellectual.

Believers remain dependent upon God.

We study Scripture carefully.

We think.

We evaluate.

We seek wisdom.

And we pray.

Truth should produce dependence upon God—not spiritual pride.

Keep Yourselves in God’s Love

Jude tells believers:

“Keep yourselves in God’s love.”

He is not suggesting that believers must earn God’s love.

Jude has already described them as loved and kept by God.

Instead, believers are called to continue faithfully in their relationship with Him.

Remain.

Abide.

Stay rooted.

Do not allow false teaching, temptation, or cultural pressure to pull you away from faithful devotion to Christ.

Truth and Mercy Belong Together

Jude’s approach to people affected by false teaching is surprisingly nuanced.

Some doubt.

Some need rescuing.

Some situations require greater caution.

But mercy remains part of the response.

Discernment without mercy can become harshness.

Mercy without discernment can become naïveté.

Jude calls believers toward both:

Truth and mercy.

The God Who Keeps You

Jude begins by describing believers as those who are kept for Jesus Christ.

Then he tells believers to keep themselves in God’s love.

Finally, the letter ends by returning to God’s keeping power:

“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling…”

There is something beautiful in that balance.

We contend.

We build.

We pray.

We remain.

We persevere.

But underneath our perseverance stands the faithfulness of God.

Our confidence is not ultimately in our ability to hold everything together.

Our confidence is in the One who holds us.

From Discernment to Worship

Jude does not end his letter by talking about false teachers.

He ends with worship.

“To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

That is an important reminder.

Healthy discernment should not leave us consumed with everything that is wrong.

It should drive us deeper into what is true.

Toward Christ.

Toward Scripture.

Toward worship.

Toward greater faithfulness.

Truth Worth Contending For

Jude reminds us that biblical truth matters enough to defend.

But we defend truth as people who are also being transformed by it.

So we contend without becoming unnecessarily combative.

We discern without becoming suspicious of everyone.

We recognize error without becoming consumed by it.

We show mercy without abandoning truth.

And we remain confident that Christ is still Lord of His Church.

God remains faithful.

And He is still:

“Able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy.”
