She Saw That He Was Beautiful

 

Pharaoh had ordered Hebrew baby boys to be thrown into the Nile.

 

Jochebed refused to surrender her child to fear.

 

Hebrews 11 remembers Moses’ parents as people who acted by faith and were not afraid of the king’s command.

 

Faith did not mean danger was imaginary.

 

The danger was very real.

 

Faith meant Pharaoh’s authority was not greater than God’s.

 

When You Have Done Everything You Can

 

For three months, Jochebed hid Moses.

 

Eventually, hiding him was no longer possible.

 

She prepared a basket, coated it carefully, placed her child inside, and set it among the reeds.

 

Imagine that moment.

 

She had done everything within her power.

 

Now she had to trust God with everything beyond it.

 

There are moments when we reach the boundary between responsibility and control.

 

We do what wisdom allows.

 

We prepare.

 

Protect.

 

Pray.

 

Then eventually we must say:

 

God, I have done what I can. I trust You with what I cannot do.

 

The Basket Was Not Abandonment

 

Jochebed was not carelessly releasing Moses.

 

She prepared the basket.

 

She chose where to place it.

 

Miriam watched nearby.

 

Surrender is not the same as giving up.

 

Biblical surrender means releasing our demand to control the outcome while remaining faithful to what God has placed within our responsibility.

 

God Was Already Ahead of Her

 

The basket eventually reaches Pharaoh’s daughter.

 

Of all people.

 

The daughter of the man who ordered Hebrew sons killed becomes part of God's plan to preserve Moses.

 

Then Miriam approaches.

 

A Hebrew nurse is needed.

 

And Moses is returned to his own mother.

 

Jochebed is now paid by Pharaoh’s household to care for the child Pharaoh had ordered destroyed.

 

Only God could write that story.

 

The Influence No One Sees

 

Jochebed does not receive many verses in Scripture.

 

She does not lead Israel out of Egypt.

 

She does not stand before Pharaoh.

 

She does not part the Red Sea.

 

Her son does.

 

Her faithfulness became part of a story much larger than she could see.

 

Never underestimate what God can do through quiet obedience.

 

Trust God With the Basket

 

Most of us will eventually have a “basket” moment.

 

Something precious reaches the point where we can no longer control what happens next.

 

A child.

 

A relationship.

 

A calling.

 

A dream.

 

A future.

 

An unanswered prayer.

 

Jochebed reminds us:

 

Prepare what you can.

 

Protect what you can.

 

Pray.

 

Act faithfully.

 

And when you reach the limits of your control, trust the God whose reach extends far beyond yours.

 

You may only see the basket among the reeds.

 

God may already be arranging what happens downstream.
