What does God actually ask of a husband?
Culture offers plenty of opinions about masculinity, leadership, authority, and marriage.
Scripture gives us a different standard.
Jesus Christ.
God’s Design for Marriage: The Husband’s Calling to Love, Lead, Honor, and Protect is a Scripture-centered Bible study examining the responsibility God gives husbands within the marriage covenant.
This is not a study about gaining control.
It is about accepting responsibility.
God calls a husband to love sacrificially, lead faithfully, honor his wife, protect the covenant, serve his family, and continually point his home toward Christ.
Love Her as Christ Loved the Church
Ephesians 5:25 establishes an extraordinary standard:
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
A husband's model for love is not culture.
It is Christ.
Jesus loved sacrificially.
He served.
He remained faithful.
He spoke truth.
He demonstrated compassion.
And He gave Himself.
Biblical leadership therefore cannot be separated from sacrificial love.
Leadership Is Responsibility, Not Privilege
Biblical headship is sometimes misunderstood as permission for a husband to demand his own way.
But Christlike leadership looks very different.
A godly husband does not ask:
“How much authority do I have?”
He asks:
“How can I faithfully carry the responsibility God has entrusted to me?”
He leads through character.
Prayer.
Wisdom.
Service.
Integrity.
Consistency.
And obedience to Christ.
Honor Your Wife
First Peter 3:7 instructs husbands to dwell with their wives according to knowledge and to give them honor.
That requires knowing her.
Listening.
Paying attention.
Understanding her concerns.
Valuing her perspective.
Speaking respectfully.
And refusing to treat her as though her voice does not matter.
A wife is not a lesser member of the marriage covenant.
She is a fellow heir of the grace of life.
Protect What God Has Entrusted to You
Protection is more than physical defense.
A husband should also protect the health of the marriage.
Protect trust.
Protect faithfulness.
Protect intimacy.
Protect his wife's dignity.
Protect the home from patterns that slowly destroy connection.
That requires boundaries, wisdom, honesty, and spiritual vigilance.
Servant Leadership
Jesus demonstrated leadership by serving.
He washed His disciples' feet.
Biblical leadership does not place a husband above serving his family.
It calls him deeper into service.
Sometimes leadership looks like making a difficult decision.
Sometimes it looks like admitting:
“I was wrong.”
Sometimes it means listening instead of fixing.
Sometimes it means taking responsibility instead of assigning blame.
Sometimes it means praying when no one else sees.
Communication Matters
A husband's words can strengthen his marriage or slowly wound it.
Biblical communication requires truth spoken with love.
That means learning to listen without immediately becoming defensive.
Address problems without attacking character.
Refuse contempt.
Control anger.
Ask forgiveness.
And pursue reconciliation rather than simply winning an argument.
Winning the argument while damaging the relationship is not victory.
Love Is More Than Emotion
Biblical love is active.
First Corinthians 13 describes love as patient, kind, truthful, enduring, and not self-seeking.
A husband will not always feel romantic.
Marriage will move through difficult seasons.
Christlike love remains committed to faithful action even when emotions fluctuate.
What About Submission?
Ephesians 5 addresses both husband and wife, but the husband's command is not:
“Make your wife submit.”
His command is:
Love her.
His responsibility is obedience to what God has commanded him.
Her responsibility before God does not excuse his failure to love sacrificially.
Marriage is healthiest when both husband and wife concentrate first on faithfully fulfilling their own biblical responsibilities.
When Leadership Becomes Control
Biblical leadership never gives permission for intimidation, coercion, manipulation, humiliation, violence, or abuse.
Those behaviors contradict the character of Christ.
Authority under Christ is accountable to Christ.
A husband cannot use Scripture as permission to sin against his wife.
The Goal Is Christlikeness
God's design for a husband is demanding because the standard is high.
Love like Christ.
Serve like Christ.
Walk in truth.
Remain faithful.
Lead with humility.
Honor your wife.
Protect the covenant.
Repent when you fail.
And keep becoming more like Jesus.
A godly husband is not a perfect husband.
He is a man continually surrendering himself to Christ and allowing that relationship to transform the way he loves his wife.
